The NEWS of the Omicron variant sparked new calls for another round of relaunch checks.
The variant was reported in South Africa on November 24, the World Health Organization (WHO) reported on Friday.
The country is currently experiencing a sharp increase in Covid cases, most likely due to the B.1.1.529 variant, now known as Omicron.
The variant was initially detected in a sample from Nov. 9, according to the WHO.
In the United States, President Joe Biden issued a statement on Friday in response to the new development of Covid: “As a precautionary measure until we have more information, I am ordering additional restrictions on air travel in from South Africa and seven other countries.
“These new restrictions will take effect on November 29. As we move forward, we will continue to be guided by what science and my medical team advise.
The president also sent a message to those who have rejected the vaccine: “If you haven’t been vaccinated, or haven’t taken your children to be vaccinated, now is the time.
He also encouraged people to get vaccinated “as soon as you are eligible”.
The news comes as New York State declared a preventative state of emergency ahead of the holiday season and fears surrounding the Omicron variant.
The decree comes into force on December 3.

However, some states have proposed legislation providing additional assistance to help people during the holiday season.
Illinois Republican lawmakers, for example, proposed a stimulus check of $ 200 for Americans earning less than $ 75,000 and $ 400 for joint filers earning less than $ 150,000.
Residents of California are preparing to receive another batch of stimulus checks, valued at up to $ 1,100 starting next week.
Several other states, including Florida, Maine and Maryland, have also provided assistance to qualified families.
Some cities across the country, including Seattle, Chicago, and Pittsburgh, have similar plans in place to support low-income families to help them get through the holiday season.
