People have long been calling for a fourth stimulus check, but so far lawmakers have shown no intention of doing so. However, now a House Democrat has called on Congress to pass another COVID-19 relief plan, increasing the odds of a new coronavirus stimulus control next year. Representative Jamaal Bowman, a progressive freshman Democrat from New York City, cites the rising number of COVID-related deaths and the growing threat from Omicron as a reason to approve another stimulus package.

House Democrat calls for another stimulus package

In a letter to Democratic House leaders, Bowman called on Congress to adopt a new COVID-19 relief package. The letter was first shared with CNN.

“We have now lost 800,000 American lives to COVID 19 – double the number we lost in World War II. This number is shocking and cannot continue to climb without further federal intervention,” Bowman says in the letter.

Further, Bowman notes that the country’s defense budget is $ 770 billion a year, but “we are not doing enough to defend against a global pandemic that is killing us directly and indirectly due to the mental health crisis. that she created “.

Speaking about what the new relief program should include, Bowman says he should focus on how the pandemic is affecting children and their mental health. He suggests creating a bereavement fund for children who have lost a primary or secondary caregiver directly or indirectly due to the coronavirus pandemic.

In addition, Bowman also wants the stimulus package to cancel federal student loans, reverse past rent and mortgage payments, reinstate the moratorium on evictions and foreclosures, renew education funding and more.

“The pandemic has and will continue to change us for years to come. We need to act now, and the surest way to do it in Congress is to exercise our power of the stock market and direct much-needed funds to our children, families and communities, ”he said.

While Bowman makes no mention of granting direct stimulus checks, the provisions he wants the package to include would serve as stimulus checks.

Will there be a coronavirus stimulation check next year?

This is not the first time Democrats have called for another stimulus package. When President Biden approved the $ 1.9 trillion stimulus package in March, many Democrats believed more government help was needed to support the recovery of the economy and people.

Last week, US Secretary of Health and Human Services Xavier Becerra also hinted his department may need more money. Of the $ 50 billion the ministry received in March for testing, it has $ 10 billion left.

“Are we going to have more than $ 10 billion in needs and costs on Covid, especially when it comes to testing? There’s a good chance we will, depending, again, on where Omicron takes us, ”Becerra told reporters.

For now, there are no more talks on another COVID-19 relief plan or new coronavirus stimulus control next year. However, if Omicron threatens to get bigger, calls for more stimulus money will become stronger.
